Stafford, Staffordshire -travel information and accommodation
Stafford is the county town of Staffordshire and as such is located in the heart of the county. Historically it grew up as a convenient stopping off point for stagecoach travellers and those travelling by canal. It has also been a market town since the Middle Ages, although the market that you can see today dates back only to 1989, along with the Guildhall Shopping Centre to ensure all your retail needs are met.
Travelling back in time, William the Conqueror also had a fortress built here and today you can still see what remains of a fine Norman castle. For another look back through the ages stroll over to Greengate Street where you’ll be able to see the Ancient High House, a fine timber framed house dating back to 1595. It is also home to the Tourist Information Centre, making it a good place to start any tour of the area. In addition a canal side walk or ride on a canal boat is another scenic way to get around.
Undoubtedly the best time to visit Stafford is in the summer during the annual In Bloom competition. This is when the area really comes to life, with colourful floral displays that delight visitors and locals alike.
